Current Action: Give feedback on County's Long Range Transportation Plan
On June 29th an executive summary of the plan was presented and comments were heard from the public. Mr Mike Weaver presented the plan and stated very clearly that growth in Williamson County will out pace our ability to build roads.  He said "You can't build your way out of congestion" faced with the kind of growth we anticipate (even accounting for the economic downturn).  Desipte his warning, there were no current public transit projects described.  All current projects presented were road builds and widenings

Go to http://citizenspeak.org/node/1672 to send your message asking our county officials to make public transit a priority. Comments must be submitted by July 9th!

It's everyone's right as a citizen to contact thier City Councilmember on any Georgetown City issue that is important to them.  To find out what district you are in open the District Map (this link may take a while to open, also it requires Adobe Reader to view) http://www.georgetown.org/gis/gis_pdfmap_downloads/CouncilDistrictsAll.pdf

Once you know what district you are in you can go to the City Council Web site and find your Councilmembers name, phone number and email address. http://www.georgetown.org/boards/council.overview.php

Here's a sample email you can send showing general support for a bus system:

Dear (councilmember's name):

I am writing to you today because I think Georgetown needs a bus system.  I understand that City Council is concerned about cost and how many riders the system will have.

I know that bus fare never pays for the system, however, I feel that subsidizing a bus system would be a worthwhile use of my tax money because it will help us make better use of the roads we have.  We are currently subsidizing car use in Georgetown by spending over $11 Million dollars of taxpayer money a year to widen roads.  A successful bus system would allow us to spend less money on widening roads by getting more people where they need to go in fewer vehicles.

I also believe that a bus system in Georgetown would be well used. We have over 14,000 likely bus riders living in our city including elderly, teens, people without cars, people who can’t drive and college students.  It would only take about 1,350 regular riders to make full use of the proposed bus system. Surely we can start there and grow as interest builds.

I hope you will continue to support efforts to get a bus system in Georgetown.

Sincerely,

(your name)
